‘Extras’ airs next Thursday

The first episode of series two of Extras will be broadcast on BBC2 on Thursday, September 14, at 9pm. See the listing on BBC. Sophia Myles will briefly appear as herself, playing an actress who is working with Orlando Bloom.

The Telegraph has the following to say about the episode:

In the first episode, Orlando Bloom bravely takes the rise out of his image as one of the world’s most swoon-inducing heart-throbs. Displaying a commendable willingness to lampoon himself, this Bloom is vanity on legs. The gag is that Maggie, who previously showed herself comically eager to date anyone with a pulse, spurns his advances. Increasingly frustrated, he tries to win her over by planting his most passionate kiss on her lips. When he steps back, however, she looks distinctly non-plussed, shrugging: “Not really my cup of tea.” Gervais says that Bloom was a tremendously good sport. “We needed the biggest 30-year-old heart-throb in the world because the joke is that he falls for Maggie and it’s the one time she’s not interested. Orlando was great – he wanted to make the character really desperate. “He totally sends himself up. In real life, he doesn’t go around worrying about polls of the most handsome actors in the world. He knows that if you want any longevity in this business, the last thing you want to be known as is pretty.”

Cameo role in ‘Extras’ for Sophia Myles

Excellent news! The stars who will be appearing in the second series of Ricky Gervais’ BBC Two sitcom ‘Extras’ have been announced. Sophia Myles will be appearing as herself in an episode centering around Orlando Bloom. She shot her scenes last Thursday.

Other stars who are set to appear are avid Bowie, Chris Martin, Sir Ian McKellen, Daniel Radcliffe, Germaine Greer, Diana Rigg, Moira Stuart, Richard Briers, Ronnie Corbett and Stephen Fry.

The series is based around extra Andy Millman, played by Gervais, an actor desperate to break into the big time. A BBC spokeswoman said filming began earlier this week and plotlines had not yet been confirmed. The episodes are due to be screened in autumn on BBC2 and HBO. Read the BBC News article

Bowie heads Extras’ star line-up

David Bowie, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and actor Orlando Bloom are among the stars set to appear in the second series of Ricky Gervais’ Extras.

Sir Ian McKellen, Daniel Radcliffe and Germaine Greer have also landed cameo roles in the BBC Two show.

The series is based around extra Andy Millman, played by Gervais, an actor desperate to break into the big time.

Kate Winslet was among the guest stars in the first series, written by Gervais and comedy partner Stephen Merchant.

Award-winning

Diana Rigg, Moira Stuart, Richard Briers, Ronnie Corbett and Stephen Fry are also included in the line-up for the sitcom’s second series, which is due to air later this year.

A BBC spokeswoman said filming began earlier this week and plotlines had not yet been confirmed.

The first series picked up two prizes at the prestigious Rose d’Or TV awards in April, winning best sitcom and best sitcom actress for Ashley Jensen, who plays Gervais’ sidekick Maggie.

But the show missed out on two Bafta awards, losing out to Armando Iannucci’s political satire, The Thick Of It.
