I just found this news reported by Los Angeles Daily Business News (click to read full story):

“The 2007 box[ur]shorts™ Film Festival, a yearlong short film exhibition taking place internationally at restaurants, bars, coffee houses and laundromats, announced today its new panel of audience and industry judges. This year’s line up of judges includes: CBS’ Moonlight actress Sophia Myles, writer-director Scott Prendergast, moviegoer “audience” teams in New York and Switzerland, industry critic Izumi Hasegawa, and the ‘06 box[ur]shorts winner, writer-director Kerrie Scher. …

“We’re excited to celebrate the many wonderful short films competing in the second year of our festival along with the audience’s responses to their creativity. Our line-up of judges, from the star power Sophia Myles brings to Izumi Hasegawa’s unique industry outlook and the diversity of every day moviegoers in New York and Europe, shows how box[ur]shorts™ is a festival where the audience makes the choices and calls the shots,” says festival director Giacun Caduff.”

To find out more about the very innovative film festival be sure to visit its home page box[ur]shorts [dot] com. And if you live in either Los Angeles, New York, Basel (Switzerland) or Hiroshima (Japan) why don’t you hang out in one of the festival’s locations - additionally to having a good time you’ll also be able to cast your own votes via the festival’s website! Which is also where, actually, we all can watch the films. Together with the Audience and Industry Jury votes, the most counts will determine which filmmaker is picking up the box[ur]shorts Audience Award during the annual event, this year held January 11, 2008 at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles.

Thanks to Mariana and Chris we now have fantastic pictures of gorgeous-looking Sophia Myles at the ‘Moonlight’ Press Conference at Day 9 of the TCA Summer Press Tour as well as the CBS Press Tour - Stars Party. Many thanks!

I’ve also added some more watermarked [edit: now better quality thanks to Mariana] pictures to the Edinburgh Festival Launch - because Sophia’s looking so happy in them. You can watch a video of the event on the official Festival’s site here or download it in the Media Vault.

Sophia Myles attended the Launch of 61st Edinburgh International Film Festival Programme at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh yesterday. As previously announced her new film ‘Hallam Foe’ will open the festival and you can win tickets for the Opening Night Gala. Visit the festival’s official site to find out how. Glasgow’s The Herald has this Sophia-relevant quote:

Ms Myles, who attended the launch of the festival programme yesterday, said: “Hallam Foe is perfect for the opening of the film festival, because David has filmed the city so beautifully, it really is the star of the film.”

They also have a little picture of her at the launch event on the front site and Mariana has sent in some more. Many thanks. Enjoy these pictures as I’m sure they’re the last we’ll see of Sophia Myles before she heads off to LA where shooting for ‘Moonlight’ is due to begin next week.

As announced here previously ‘Hallam Foe’ will be shown at the 61st Edinburgh Film Festival. It has now been announced that the film will actually open the festival. This certainly is great news! Read the announcement here on the official site.

This year’s official theme of the film festival is ‘The Written Word’, and Hallam Foe is an ideal choice for the opening film as it is an adaptation of a Scottish novel - largely set and shot in Edinburgh. The Festival’s Artistic Director, Hannah McGill, had this to say about the film:

“Hallam Foe is a stunning achievement by all concerned - a film with an unforgettable atmosphere and some of the finest performances of the year. We’re enormously proud to have the film open what we anticipate to be a landmark film festival.”

The Berlin Film Festival is over and ‘Hallam Foe’ has been received very well! The various German and English reviews I’ve read unanimously praise the performances, especially of leading actor Jamie Bell. Some also call the film itself a film jewel. I’ve added some english reviews to this site’s press archive. The film was a favourite with both the critics and the audience making it a likely contender for the main prize. However, the winners of the Berlin Film Festival were all rather unexpected and unpredictable. Read more about it in the messageboard.

Still, director David Mackenzie won a SILVER BEAR FOR THE BEST MUSIC for the use of music in Hallam Foe! Congratulations!!

Berlin: Market sales

Earlier this week I noticed that ‘Hallam Foe’ will have a theatrical release here in Switzerland on October 4. I’m so excited!

The Berlin Film Festival is of course not only about the Competition for the Golden Bear. It’s also a place for selling upcoming films. According to Variety there’s more ‘Hallam Foe’ news: Prokino has acquired German and Austrian rights and the film has also been sold to Nordisk (Scandinavia), Rosebud (Greece), Monopole Pathe (Switzerland) and VTI/Karantanija (former Yugoslavia). As we’ve known for a while now Buena Vista Intl. will release the movie in the U.K. later this year.

The Outlander site also put me in the direction of this article at CinEuropa about WildBunch (who’s handling international distribution for ‘Outlander’):

Preferring to be based half-way between the Potsdamer Platz and the Martin Gropius Bau, instead of having a stand at the European Film Market at the Berlin International Film Festival, French international sales outfit Wild Bunch are still one of the major players at the market that begins on Thursday (Feb 10). Its line-up features over 40 films, including Howard McCain’s Outlander.
