The Berlinale star portraits, taken by our photographer Gerhard Kassner and signed by the portrayed stars before their gala premieres at the Berlinale Palast, are familiar to every Festival goer. As part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Berlinale, a selection of the 812 portraits taken since 2003 will be displayed in a comprehensive photo exhibition in public space throughout Berlin in numerous City Light Poster display cases.

Myles: I think as you get older (I don’t know if you’ve found this.) but within the industries, when you start off acting, it’s kind of rather selfish motives; you are the kid who just wants to get paid to throw on the costumes and pretend to be someone else. The more experience that you have and the more films that you make, you start to realize that as a storyteller, it’s not just about you and the film’s experience for yourself. It becomes about your audience. And you realize, “Wow, I actually have the power here to make a piece… As opposed to the movies that are out there right now that just provide purely escapism for an hour and a half while you go and eat popcorn and forget about your own life…

Bell: Rising fuel prices, rising fuel prices I need some escapism… [All Laugh]

Myles: Films like this which deal with such archetypal themes of self-discovery, the search for love, and the fear of death, that can really actually affect the audience and take the viewer to somewhere deeper within themselves. That’s what it becomes about.

And the object of his desperate, icky and fond attention is certainly well chosen. Like Emily Mortimer, who played Ewan McGregor’s dream woman in Mr. Mackenzie’s previous film, “Young Adam,” Ms. Myles has the task of turning a phantasm of adolescent desire into a real person.

Kate’s insistence, late in the movie, that she is just that is both superfluous and unconvincing. In her loneliness, her toughness, her perfect mix of maternal warmth and sexual adventurousness, she is at heart a literary conceit, an inhabitant of that realm of the male imagination where lust and sentimentality meet and mingle. But Ms. Myles inhabits the role with such crisp and understated wit that she manages to hold such doubts at bay. Common sense might suggest that a woman in Kate’s position should change her locks, call the police or move to another town when a guy like Hallam shows up, but somehow she never seems more sensible than when she does the opposite of what prudence might dictate.

The smaller performances are nearly as strong as Ms. Myles’s and Mr. Bell’s, even when the characters are a bit too broadly drawn…

Jamie, as far as I’m concerned, is a national treasure. I would say he’s right up there at the top of my favorite co-stars, because in any scene between him and I, he’s so good and moving that all I had to do was just react to whatever he was doing. He’s made this seamless transition from child star to adult star without any of the rehab and all the nonsense.

(about the status of Outlander) It’s taking a while to come out. As always, there’s drama, I think, behind the scenes. I’m not entirely sure. No one tells me because I’m just the actress. It will come out, and it’s not true that it’s going straight to DVD….

I think when I was younger I was kind of looking for somebody to come along to complete me. And I’ve realized now that I have to basically be complete — I have to complete myself. And then the right thing will come. I’m enjoying the single life. I’m enjoying taking this time for myself because I think it’s important.

According to Videota the US DVD for Mister Foe will come out November 11, 2008.

Well, I think, you know, as an actor – I mean, I think I make my living pretending to be someone else, so I think that element of kind of wearing a mask – which I think Kate does. I think she has a kind of professional mask that she puts on every day in the office, but it’s only through – it’s through Hallam’s eyes that the audience sees who she really is.

… But underneath it all – there’s a purity there that I think she’s attracted to. And I also think she’s not stupid. And she knows that he’s gonna – you know, he’s gonna age well. You know, he’s got potential. [LAUGHTER] I like also the fact that a relationship between an older girl and a younger guy was explored. Because I haven’t seen that for a while on film.

It really is a film that kind of deals with archetypal themes, you know? So it’s gonna have a profound effect on the human soul. I mean, it deals with the search for love. You know, it’s about a voyage of self-discovery and growth, and also the fear of death. It’s going to make people think. And it will make them feel. How it’s gonna make them feel? I’m really not one to judge. But again, you know, the sexuality in the movie, it’s not – like, all of the sex scenes, they’re not there to be sexy. They’re not sensual.

She also talks about working long hours for “Moonlight” – which is “kind of dead, completely dead” and not coming back – and how she felt about the show’s sudden end:

Everything happens for a reason. It was a massive shock that it finished, because we were all expecting to go into a second season and I would have welcomed that. But the powers that be have decided that it won’t go any further, so. I’m excited that I’m now free to do movies again.

I’d also like to bring something from a post’s comments section to everyone’s attention. It’s some new information regarding the “Outlander” DVD rumour. Official word from The Weinstein Company (US distributors) is that there is NO OFFICIAL DVD date yet for the movie. That was just an error on the parts of the two e-commerce sites that listed it. In fact The Weinstein Company will be reaching out to the two retailers (Movies Unlimited and Amazon) and will hopefully have that erroneous information removed. Thanks for the heads up echorock!
