New York Magazine talks to Sophia

This new interview with Sophia Myles comes from New York Magazine’s culture and entertainment blog Vulture. Out of all the recent interviews this seems like the most relaxed. Be sure to read Sophia’s answers to questions about Mister Foe, Moonlight and Outlander.

Jamie, as far as I’m concerned, is a national treasure. I would say he’s right up there at the top of my favorite co-stars, because in any scene between him and I, he’s so good and moving that all I had to do was just react to whatever he was doing. He’s made this seamless transition from child star to adult star without any of the rehab and all the nonsense.

(about the status of Outlander) It’s taking a while to come out. As always, there’s drama, I think, behind the scenes. I’m not entirely sure. No one tells me because I’m just the actress. It will come out, and it’s not true that it’s going straight to DVD….

Parade talks to Sophia

Another new interview. This time around from Parade Magazine. Reading the title “Sophia Myles On Her First On-Screen Kiss” made me expect little but there are some nice quotes in there about enjoying the single life, growing up, living in LA and playing a Viking princess.

I think when I was younger I was kind of looking for somebody to come along to complete me. And I’ve realized now that I have to basically be complete — I have to complete myself. And then the right thing will come. I’m enjoying the single life. I’m enjoying taking this time for myself because I think it’s important.

My philosophy exactly! Read the full interview.

According to Videota the US DVD for Mister Foe will come out November 11, 2008.

Small audio interview & more

After Tuesday’s press junket for “Mister Foe” the first interview with Sophia Myles has surfaced online. It’s an audio snippet and is available on Hollywood Outbreak. Listen to Sophia talking about the stigma that’s attached to vicar’s daughters and the sex scenes in this movie. Thanks Stacey for the heads up!

On other news 10-year-old Shelby interviewed Alex O’Loughlin for her website and he mentioned Sophia Myles when answering a question about who made him laugh on the “Moonlight” set. Listen to the interview here. (Allow some time for the site to load as there is currently an overflow of visitors to that site). Thanks moviefnatic for the heads up!

I’d also like to bring something from a post’s comments section to everyone’s attention. It’s some new information regarding the “Outlander” DVD rumour. Official word from The Weinstein Company (US distributors) is that there is NO OFFICIAL DVD date yet for the movie. That was just an error on the parts of the two e-commerce sites that listed it. In fact The Weinstein Company will be reaching out to the two retailers (Movies Unlimited and Amazon) and will hopefully have that erroneous information removed. Thanks for the heads up echorock!

What’s up with the ‘Outlander’ rumour?

Ok, numerous blogs have picked up on the rumor and are claiming that ‘Outlander‘ will go straight to DVD on November 18, 2008. Now there has been no official press release confirming this - something which usually any official DVD release gets - and the only ground for it is that apparently both Movies Unlimited and Amazon have the DVD up for pre-order. Those dates are extremely unreliable however and are subject to change. Just think about how the ‘Moonlight‘ DVD was at one time up for pre-order in September and now we’ll have to wait till somewhen in 2009. Even the (possible) starter of the rumour Dread Central admitted to that, saying: “although several months back they [Movies Unlimited] had DVD release listing for All the Boys Love Mandy Lane that didn’t pan out.”

According to the official Outlander blog The Weinstein Company is contractually obligated for at least a limited release. So stay tuned for more information!

[edit:] check the comments section for further info! Official word from The Weinstein Company (US distributors) is that there is NO OFFICIAL DVD date yet for the movie. That was just an error on the parts of the two e-commerce sites that listed it. Thanks for the heads up echorock!

In other news Launching Films lists February 20, 2009 as a theatrical release date for ‘Outlander‘ in the UK.

After all the excitement of the world premiere I think we can now again get used to waiting to hear news about ‘Outlander‘. Even though “released” at a film festival and also despite the film’s being screened a dozen times at the Fantasy Filmfest in Germany let’s keep in mind this is still far from being a general release. Here some additional ‘Outlander‘ related pictures:

I’ve been granted kind permission to add the pictures from the movie’s official blog featuring Sophia to this site’s gallery. Many thanks and enjoy!

In addition, I’ve been able to get my hands on 5 paper printed photographs of Sophia Myles during the ‘Outlander‘ Press Conference at the 61. Film Festival Locarno.

‘Outlander’ World Premiere - Part 2

I’ve finished the overview page for ‘Outlander‘ in the projects section. So go there to see a more in-depth description of the film and Sophia’s role. I’ve tried to stay away from major spoilers but of course if you want to remain unspoiled before seeing the film for yourself don’t read. The film is certainly on a par with major blockbusters - even though better than your usual period action piece. What I personally liked very much was the authentic look and feeling of the Viking period, the epic shots (e.g. air-shot of the Viking village, whole waterfall sequence), the score, the shield dance as well as the acting performances (apart from Sophia, Jack Huston, John Hurt, Jim Caviezel). Of course to me the best thing about it is Sophia Myles! As we’ve been able to judge from the stills already the red hair suits her very well - and even better her character Freya. She’s certainly very willful and more than able to handle a sword. Freya’s introduction scene is very impressive. Sure, Sophia’s played other willful girls before, but they’ve always been using words rather than actions. Freya tops even Lady P.

The film also features plenty of gore - which is to be honest not really my kind of thing - but there should be plenty of people happy to hear this. As to the film’s supposedly featuring lots of known elements, well how could it not? After all the idea was to kind of tell the ‘real’ story behind the Beowulf legend. While major monster movies usually tend to have too glossy a look for my taste many other monster movies are marketed as family entertainment and everything looks too neat, too colourful. ‘Outlander‘ in my opinion features a balanced mixture of epic, glossy, rugged and authentic look. The film is what it claims to be - and all the elements work well, this is escapism in its purest form. We certainly were treated to some fabulous entertainment.

It was raining in the whole country on Friday - probably the hardest down in Locarno. So, we were more than anxious what the weather would be like in the evening. Fortunately, it cleared up and we stayed dry. No rain, yes, but it was cold! Very cold for a summer day in August. The film was screened in both the Piazza Grande (outdoor venue) and the FEVI (indoor venue) but I watched outside. We had fantastic seats and it was amazing to see all of the action on such a huge screen. And the sound! They really must have had some fantastic sound equipment. The action was all around us and we felt like being right there, celebrating the defeat of the bear, being under Moorwen attack, laying in the monster’s liar and fighting it under the waterfall - and thanks to the temperatures it was also almost as if we were right there in cold Nova Scotia.

We met up with Sophia Myles and the rest of the ‘Outlander‘ team at the beautiful Palazzo Casorella and posed for some pictures with Sophia down at the Piazza Grande (see last update). Sophia was radiant and charming, Jack Huston very entertaining (he’s sure to get his big break soon, he’s got everything it takes to be a major star for a long time to come), and Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain very enthuasiastic about their work. There was also a team from Frenetic - the film’s Swiss distributor. No clear information on release dates yet. Maybe early 2009. Switzerland will have similar release dates as its neighbouring countries Germany, France and Italy. And everyone seems to look to the US anyway. Thank you very much Sophia (and Frenetic) for making Friday evening the wonderful experience it was for us! I guess I’m also thankful to the Locarno Festival for having ‘Outlander‘ in their programme.

I’ve not been able to find many reviews for ‘Outlander’ following its world premiere. The Outlander website put together an overview. Almost none made any special reference to Sophia - Variety simply says Kate Winslet lookalike Sophia Myles. And The Hollywood Reporter had this to say: “Myles looks the part too even if her plummy English vowels and crisp consonants jar a bit but then again you’d be amazed if a daughter of John Hurt didn’t speak well.” Well, we’d expect nothing less from a princess, certainly!

The film had its world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival and, handled suitably by the Weinstein Company in the U.S. and Wild Bunch internationally, it should do crowd-pleasing business all around.

I added 5 more HQ pics of the ‘Outlander’ Photocall as well as 2 pics I took when the ‘Outlander’ team was on stage. I was standing at a very fortunate place really, but not when it came to taking pictures of the gang on stage. In addition I was also trying to juggle carrying jackets and what not while filming. So I really only got a few seconds (watch in the Media Archive). I’m especially sad to have missed the moment when Sophia adressed the audience. She said she was happy to be back in Switzerland after something like 10 years and thanked the festival for this opportunity.

Unfortunately, I’ve as of yet not been able to find any video coverage by the media. If you come across something please be sure to pass on the information! Also if you’re not able to provide a clip or a link we’d be most happy to hear a report of what a media outlet had to say about Sophia/the movie!

I’ve just come back from Locarno. I’m far too tired to be creative and try to come up with a coherent report. But for now, let me just say how much I enjoyed watching ‘Outlander‘ in the open-air venue and what a fun gang the ‘Outlander‘ team is! More to come later. For now enjoy some pictures:

‘Outlander’ Production Notes
Posted by Maria on August 7, 2008
Filed under: Movies, Press Updates | Tags: ,

Right in time for the Film Festival Locarno the Production Notes for ‘Outlander‘ have been released. Here the Sophia-relevant parts:

Director Howard McCain
„We really did attract a great cast,” affirmed McCain, „all of whom are in it for the right reasons. From Jim Caviezel and John Hurt to Sophia Myles, Jack Huston and Ron Perlman, they all liked the script, not because it was a monster movie, not because it was a genre movie, but because of the underlying story.”

„Sophia Myles was ideal for Freya because she brought a sense of grit and edge and she inhabited this historical world well. I had seen TRISTAN AND ISOLDE and loved Sophia’s performance,” said McCain.

Sophia Myles
„It’s curious how I seem to get offered a lot of royalty!” said Myles, who has played a princess several times previously, including TRISTAN AND ISOLDE. „But Freya’s different. She gets her hands dirty. She gets to fight the Moorwen, which delighted me when I read that in the script. She’s more masculine than any other character I’ve played, and that I get to deck Jim with a roundhouse is impressive, but then again, I’m surrounded by so much testosterone in this film. The boys are great. Jack has become my best friend, Jim has been great, showing me up all the time with his push-ups, and then there is John Hurt. Just to be in the same room with him is a privilege.”

About her director, Myles said, „Howard has been fantastic. We instantly connected. He sees the vision and he knows what he wants. It’s been a mud bath at times, but the harder it is on the day, the better it looks on the screen, so I was prepared to put up with all the muck.” Myles said that when she read the script, she never envisioned Freya as a blonde, her own color, and had always harbored a wish to be a redhead, if only for a brief while. She convinced McCain to try it out and it worked beautifully with the personality of the character.

Co-Star Jack Huston
Huston thoroughly enjoyed the cast of OUTLANDER. „Ron Perlman is just the epitome of cool. Sophia is a sweetheart, and Jim is a great actor with an amazing intensity which is perfect for the character.

Sophia’s costumes
It was Freya’s dresses which truly showcased Hanson’s talents. Using Fortuny „Delphos” pleating and laundering fabrics so they appeared hand-loomed, the gowns for this Viking princess are deceptively simple. For the emerald gown Freya wore in Shield Hall, Hanson reversed the cloth, and suddenly the smooth gold flecks had a whimsical unevenness to them. The gown Freya wore for the funeral scene is the most elaborate: a garnet-colored fabric with a heavily embroidered ceremonial cloak is complimented by a fur piece over one shoulder. The belting, buckles and footwear, while not necessarily period correct, contribute to the primitive sophistication.

There’s another ‘Outlander‘ site you have to bookmark: Official Outlander Blog by the film’s co-writer Dirk Blackman. He is blogging about the film’s journey to the screen so it should be interesting to regularly visit. He will also travel to Locarno, Switzerland for the world premiere of ‘Outlander‘ - along with Sophia, director Howard McCain, Jack Huston and producer Chris Roberts.

It’s also via this official blog that I’ve found 3 more photos of Sophia Myles on the set of the Viking adventure. Enjoy!
